A few days before I drew this, I borrowed a very comprehensive documentary on the Crusades from the library. I was thinking, "How cool! Medieval stuff!", but then, as I learned more and more, I became extremely disillusioned over the entire horrible mess. I'd known the Crusades were bad, but until then I didn't know just how bad they were. The Crusades were so bad, that I'd be hard-pressed to think of anything worse, and they were made so excruciatingly bad by the fact that all violence within was justified by a warped sense of Christianity. It does nothing but give me the willies. So after I watched this, I felt extremely unsettled for several days. After all, these people are my ancestors. Then, I drew this. I didn't realize until after I'd finished the pencil drawing what it actually meant. I thought I came from elves, but instead I came from dragons.
I used a lot of medieval resources for this, including marginal drawings from The Canturbury Tales other various examples of everyday medieval life. I especially yanked the dragon from a painting containing several mythical creatures dating around 1450.
Originally I watercolored it, but it looked only soso, so then I attempted painting it in Photoshop. It was one of my first attempts, so .. y'know. Don't kill me over it.
